Jimmy V Week

This is the one week a year that my heart goes out to all of those who cancer has affected. If cancer has affected you or someone in your life you know how it feels. You don't know whats going to happen with it. One of the best supporters of this was the late Jim Valvano. He was born on March 10 1946.
Jimmy V got into basketball when he played at Rutgers, with All-American Bob Lloyd, in 1967. Under their leadership, they finished third in the NIT, which was the last tournament held at the old Madison Square Garden. He was named the Senior Athlete of the Year at Rutgers.
He is known though more for his coaching than being a player. He started of his Coaching Career started at Johns Hopkins University in 1969. He went 10-9 that season, his only season at the school. Then after Johns Hopkins, he went to Bucknell, where in three seasons he went 33-42, his best season was in the 1974-1975 season, he went 14-12. After Bucknell, he went to Iona. He went 94-45 and made the NCAA Tournament twice. In the 1978-79 season and 1979-80 season. He went 23-6 and 28-4 in those seasons respectively. Then he went to NC State. Where he went on to win the NCAA Championship in 1982-83. They beat the top-seede Houston Cougars 54-52 when Dereck Whittenburg threw up a last second heave that was put back by Lorenzo Charles as time expired. This was no push over Cougar team who were led by future Hall Of Famers Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon. His famous reaction, looking for somebody to hug after the victory. He never made it that far again, but that one win made it for him. After he retired, he worked for ESPN as a broadcaster with Dick Vitale.
In June of 1992, he was told he had Metastasized, and form of bone cancer. At the ESPY Awards on March 3 1993, he spoke about him creating the "Jimmy V Foundation." His dedication was to find a cure for cancer.  His famous motto was "Don't give up, don't ever give up." He closed his speech by saying " Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul and those three things carry on forever."
Now you might of already have known about this, but you should think about it. This man was truly devoted to finding the cure for cancer. It will live on forever in the Jimmy V Foundation. As I opened the article, cancer has probably affected us all somehow in someway. I'm not telling you to donate money to the Jimmy V Foundation or anything, but just think about how many people cancer affects. If there is ever a cure found for cancer, Jimmy V will be smiling up there in heaven. Hopefully, one day there will finally be a cure so no one else will have to be affected by this.
