It's the last week of the 2010 College Football season(non-bowl games), and this year has been very interesting. We've had the most exciting dual threats such as Auburn QB Cam Newton and Michigan QB Denard Robinson emerge; we've had some thrillers such as the 67-65 4 OT win by Michigan over Illinois, and Auburn's 28-27 win over Alabama; and we've had great upsets, like Jacksonville State's week 1 49-48 2 OT upset over Ole Miss. Overall, it's been a great year for college football, and even better, we have 3 undefeated teams. If either Oregon or Auburn lose to their respective opponents, we will have for the first time ever, a non-BCS conference school play in the BCS National Championship game. That team is TCU, whom has been a consistent bowl buster for a few years now, along with Boise State. TCU, who plays in the sub-par Mountain West Conference, has played Boise State the last 2 bowl games, and is expected to play in the Rose Bowl against the Wisconsin Badgers if all goes well for Oregon and Auburn. If not, they're headed to Arizona against the team that didn't faulter.
Enough of that, the game of the week is NOT #1 Auburn vs #19 South Carolina, it is NOT #2 Oregon vs Oregon State, and it is NOT #15 Virginia Tech vs #21 Florida State... the game of the week is(drumroll please)!!!!..........................................
#9 Oklahoma vs #13 Nebraska
This game is for a spot in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona. Both teams come in at 10-2 with a 6-2 conference record. Both teams can blow out opponents, both teams can suffocate offenses by forceful, intimidating defense. Here's a recap on both teams:
Oklahoma: The Sooners have fought a hard season, and have definitely earned their 10-2 record. Their only 2 losses have come against now #14 Missouri and now #17 Texas A&M. It's tough when you have a QB without much experience, especially when your best receiving option in TE Jermaine Gresham(Cincinnati Bengals). You know what's even harder? Losing your Heisman trophy winning QB that becomes the #1 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft in QB Sam Bradford(St. Louis Rams). QB Landry Jone has definitely stepped up to the challenge of replacing Bradford, for he has thrown for 3947 yards, 34 TD, 10 INT, and a 66.0 completion %. Last week, Oklahoma played its in-state rival in what might've been THE best thriller this year,a 47-41 win against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, led by soon-to-be All American WR Justin Blackmon. 40 total points were scored in the 4th quarter between the two teams(23 by Oklahoma). Jones was by far the MVP of the game, throwing the ball 62 times(completing 37 of those passes) for a whopping 468 yards and 3 TD. It was the highlight of his short career, as it got them to now, the Big 12 Championship game.
Nebraska: The Cornhuskers have equally fought for a hard earned record. They lost the 2nd overall pick(the irony) in the NFL Draft, DT Ndamukong Suh(Detroit Lions). They are lead by stand-out freshman QB Taylor Martinez, leading the way with 1435 passing yards, 9 TD and a 59.5 completion % as well as 974 rushing yards and 12 rushing TDs. They are also led by DT Jared Crick, who teamed up with Suh last year to be the most dominating defensive front in college football. This season, Crick has 70 tackles and 8 sacks. He plows through interior lineman with an ultimate bullrush, and will be a possible 1st round pick in the NFL Draft this upcoming April. The highlight of the Cornhuskers' season was the two consecutive weeks where they faced Oklahoma State and Missouri. They won both games, a 51-41 duel against Oklahoma State, and an impressive 31-17 win over Missouri. In Oklahoma, Taylor Martinez threw for 5 TD and 323 yards and WR Brandon Kinnie caught 3 passes for 62 yards, all 3 catches being TDs. In Nebraska, RB Roy Helu rushed for a school record 307 yards and 3 TDs against the then-unbeaten Missouri Tigers.
Team Leaders:
Oklahoma-
Passing: QB Landry Jones- 3947 passing yards, 34 TD, 66.0 completion %
Rushing: RB DeMarco Murray- 1053 rushing yards, 14 TD, 64 receptions, 535 yards, 5 TD
Receiving: WR Ryan Broyles- 115 receptions 1391 yards, 13 TD, 12.1 yards per catch
Nebraska-
Passing: QB Taylor Martinez- 1435 passing yards, 9 TD, 59.5 completion %
Rushing: RB Roy Helu Jr.- 1120 rushing yards, 10 TD, 6.7 yards per carry
Receiving: WR Niles Paul- 39 receptions, 515 yards, 1 TD, 13.2 yards per catch
Keys to Game:
Oklahoma- Landry Jones must find Ryan Broyles and DeMarco Murray as much as possible, throw them screens and quick slants, get them into open space, and it should prevent any hits on Jones from big-time DT Jared Crick.
Prediction: Oklahoma wins 37-21
Nebraska- Taylor Martinez must use his mobility to stretch the defense to find open receivers. If it works out, Martinez and the offense will be able to put up big numbers against a decent Oklahoma defense.
